What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy can be understood as an integrative psychoanalytic applied theory that can quickly get us in touch with our intuition and subconscious mind, cutting through over-thinking and emotional defenses. Most importantly, art therapy is concerned with the artistic process, symbolism, and metaphors brought forth in the art while not being concerned with the final product. In fact, art therapists generally believe that trying to create art based on aesthetics in a session often blocks the therapeutic process.
As a practicing art therapist, I believe the expressive arts have inherent therapeutic qualities capable of dramatically improving people’s quality of life for the better. As we study the science of creative expression as a path to healing, we also work toward broadening awareness of the power of art to discover, explore, and heal.
I believe creating art can help individuals gain insight through connecting with various levels of the self and exploring new outlooks that will assist in healing and personal growth. I utilize a mindfulness approach with a client-centered modality to support the client’s therapeutic process. I have had the pleasure of working with an assortment of clients of diverse experiences, ages, and challenges. I aim to create a brave space that inspires community, connection, and curiosity.
Let me introduce myself…
I'm Katherine Rosenblatt, MA LPC ATR-P; but please call me Katy.
I have had art materials tangled between my fingers for as long as I can remember. Art is how I connect with the world and is often how I communicate. The art of creating is inherently healing, I came to find out, as that became my coping mechanism during my turbulent childhood. Art never judged, and it seemed always to hold what I needed it to, whether that be anger, anxiety, or grief.
Traditional therapy rarely worked for me. I seldom felt understood by the person sitting in the chair opposite of me. I often felt stuck, which was frustrating and ultimately harmful to my self-esteem and growing anxiety. I took this dissatisfaction and poured myself into years of learning around the world to integrate my various areas of study and life experiences to assist me in unraveling the human psyche in support of helping others. In particular, I related to Edith Kramer’s art therapy model, which focuses on discovering associations between the creative process and the unconscious mind.
As an experienced expressive arts therapist, I am a master-level clinician who works with people of all ages across a broad spectrum of practice. I am passionate about reaching out to teens and adults and providing them with a brave and creative space to explore life’s challenges. Life's journey can be overwhelming, filled with transitions, experimentation, and milestones; let's process things together.
I obtained my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, specializing in Transpersonal Art Therapy, from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. Before my work in art therapy, I received my Bachelor's degree, majoring in Art History, with a double minor in Psychology and Anthropology from the University of Northern Colorado. I am currently working on my PhD. through Kings College London in applied neuroscience to further explore the Expressive Therapies Continuum concerning mental and physical health. I continue to combine my knowledge, skills, and training in Art Therapy, Psychology, and Neuroscience to treat diverse populations with various goals and treatment needs effectively.
What people are saying:
Justina, 24
“I had never felt so seen and understood by a therapist before working with Katy. She is a kind-hearted, welcoming individual who meets you exactly where you are. She was able to hold space and made it so easy to express what I was feeling, even when I struggled to communicate the same things to my talk therapist. Through working with her, I cultivated a sense of self-worth that I was not sure existed prior and an experience that has since helped me begin carving out my path with a new sense of confidence and clarity. After studying art therapy as an undergrad, it was great to understand the benefits of the practice on a personal level. I had been struggling with a lot of fear and doubt about pursuing a degree in the field, and Katy helped me embrace my artist identity and realize what was holding me back. Through the time I saw her, she has become a fantastic mentor to me, and I am incredibly grateful for the growth I experienced under her guidance.”
Madison, 17
“I love working with Katy because she challenges me and gets me out of my comfort zone. It is lovely to process through artwork rather than be forced to talk. I also like that she shares what is happening in the brain and nervous system while creating art. I finally feel comfortable in my body because I now understand what is happening and why. I am thankful she gives me space to explore without forcing conversation; she can sit in the silence and create alongside you without it being strange. There is no pressure; I can just be as I am.”
Xavier, 42
“Katy challenged me to look outside of my own experiences and to observe my ripple effect. She was able to break concepts down, which led to positive changes in my perspective of life and balanced moving forward. I am very grateful for her guidance and wisdom.”
Shawn, 35
“We hired Katy for our company’s team-building afternoon. Her thoughtful activities, inclusivity, vibrant personality, and fun-filled atmosphere blew us away. Katy created an insightful agenda that was engaging and deeply personal, which not only helped us connect as a team but also sprouted curiosity about our mental health. I cannot wait to utilize her services in the future.”
